Robert Honigberg: Chief Medical & Quality Officer

Dr. Honigberg has joined the Employer Direct Healthcare to oversee the growth of our provider network and to administer our high quality standards for the best possible patient experience.

"Domestic Medical Travel is going to become a standard part of every health plan." Dr. Honigberg is a former surgeon and a current healthcare executive with broad experience in the fields of surgical device safety, research and measurement, and quality and complication reporting. He is currently the consulting Chief Medical Officer for URAC (Utilization Review Accreditation Commission) in Washington, D.C., and consults for several start-up companies in the fields of medical device safety, surgical quality and outcomes reporting.  He is also a steering committee member of the Aspen Health Stewardship Project, and on the Board of Directors of the Center for International Health.

As the Chief Medical and Quality Officer of the Employer Direct Healthcare, Dr. Honigberg will oversee the quality assurance and control process for multiple surgical institutions in the network as well as the procedural and network strategy.

As the consulting Chief Medical Officer for URAC (Utilization Review Accreditation Commission), Dr. Honigberg serves as the leader of research, measurement and patient safety.  He also serves as a key spokesperson and champion for the role of accreditation, education and measurement to promote quality in healthcare.

As the former Chief Medical Officer and the Head of Clinical Trials for GE Healthcare and Ethicon Endo-Surgery (Johnson & Johnson), Dr. Honigberg led clinical trials and safety reporting for surgical, monitoring and anesthesia devices as well as device quality control processes for patient safety protection.  The latter role focused on control processes for both anticipated and unanticipated safety and device interaction with surgical teams and patients, including infection control issues.  Dr. Honigberg also led pharmaceutical clinical trials in multiple surgical settings while at Ortho Biotech (Johnson & Johnson).

Dr. Honigberg undertook his internship and residency in surgery at Montefiore Hospital and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.  His educational background includes a B.A. in Economics from Duke University, an MD from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
